Give Kenny a trial bike and he will deliver. Since his first junior outing in 1992, at the age of nine, ‘the Magician’ has produced an awesome list of achievements: two Cadet World Championships, two Junior World Championships, a Junior European Championship, multiple Elite World Championships, numerous Elite World Cup wins, and several Elite European Championship titles.
Kenny counts Travis Pastrana and Stefan Everts as influences on his career, and when not competing, he still likes the thrill of two wheels, taking off cross-country on the mountain bike and riding his Moto X trailbike.
Kenny is always pushing to help to develop his sport by reaching a more mainstream audience. Early in 2009, Kenny set off on a five-week global trek, crossing from Spain to England, and then on to the American states of Cleveland, California and Hawaii. His encounters with biking legends, places and influential athletes within the sport were aired on the Extreme Sports Channel.
In 2011, Kenny was again featured on the Extreme Sports Channel with his own Kenny Belaey's Bigtime Trials Adventure, showcasing his adventures on a road trip through South Africa. He also featured in a global adidas commercial alongside sports legends Messi and Beckham.
But despite his small-screen success, his focus remains on the tracks and trails, as he continues to compete with the elite at the likes of the UCI Trials World Championships and the UEC European Trials Championships.
Winning isn't always enough, though. Sometimes you need to push the limits of what is physically possible, which is why Kenny came up with his BALANCE project in 2015. It involved year of behind-the-scenes planning and six months' of intense balance training, culminating in Kenny taking to the mountains of La Plagne, France, where he rode his trials bike along an 18m-long slackline, 112m above a gorge at an altitude of 2,700m.
“The moment my wheel touched the actual slackline for the very first time, after months of training and preparation and while being so self-confident, the only thing I could think of was, ‘This is impossible!’,” he says.“But with proper belief in my abilities, and sheer focus and determination, I managed to succeed. This was without a doubt the hardest challenge I’ve ever faced.”
