About the Red Bull Valparaíso Cerro Abajo 2026 race
Red Bull Valparaíso Cerro Abajo marks the second stop in the 2025/2026 season, with riders having already completed the gruelling first event in Genoa last August.
This year's event – the 22nd time Red Bull Cerro Abajo has landed in the Chilean city – will once again bring together the world's top downhill riders to tackle the renowned urban track that descends through the steep streets and alleys of Valparaíso. The event win will be awarded to the fastest rider to conquer the super-technical course.
The streets turn into a racetrack for one weekend only in Chile
The race follows in a time-trial format, with the fastest descent deciding the race winner. The event format consists of a Qualification Round followed by the Finals. All riders compete in an individual time trial in qualifying, with the fastest 15 advancing to the Finals.
The starting order for qualification is determined by the reverse order of the previous year's series rankings, followed by reverse UCI ranking. Riders advance based solely on their qualifying time, although certain athletes hold protected status and may still advance to the Finals in the event of a mechanical issue or crash.
In the Finals, riders start one at a time in reverse order of their qualifying results, with the fastest qualifier starting last. All man-made features on course — including wallrides, jumps, and drops — are mandatory, with time penalties applied for incorrect execution. With no tape markings on the course, memorisation plays a critical role, demanding precision, commitment, and a clean run to secure the fastest possible time.
2025 King of the Port Tomas Slavik returns to defend his title in Chile
Riders need razor-sharp reflexes, serious stamina, and absolute confidence to thread the line at speeds reaching up to 56kph. Success comes down to finding the perfect balance between aggression and precision – too cautious and time slips away, too wild and a crash can end the run instantly.
The official start list brings together a stacked field of elite urban downhill racers. Returning for 2026 will be last year's Red Bull Valparaíso Cerro Abajo winner Tomas Slavik (CZE), 2025 podium finishers Felipe Agurto (CHI) and Lucas Borba (BRA) – who also took the event win in 2024 – as well as two-time Valparaíso winner Pedro Ferreira (CHI).
