Australia’s Wave Rock is one of those natural wonders of the world. This long granite rock face in Western Australia is shaped like an ocean wave that has been frozen momentarily in time.
The natural formation of Wave Rock also lends itself to a natural over-vert quarter pipe. The rock is a humongous 14m (47ft) high and 110m (350ft) long.
Wave Rock and its natural quarter pipe came to the attention of Australian sport content film makers InfinityList.
They saw an opportunity for a bike rider to tackle this beast for a film edit and brought Australian BMX star Danny Campbell into the project as the rider they wanted to take on Wave Rock.
Wave Rock itself is located in Hyden Wildlife Park in Western Australia. This is classic Australian outback country. Scrubland, dirt and rocks dominate the landscape. The nearest city is Perth and that is a five hour drive away.
Permission was however needed to ride Wave Rock. After careful negotiations with Hyden Tourism Development Company, InfinityList were given the green light for Danny to tackle Wave Rock.
According to InfinityList, the finished edit took three days to film in “blistering heat”. Danny performed a number of highly technical tricks and whips on the rock but the most impressive thing of all were the huge drop-ins he undertook at the top of Wave Rock.
While the edit seems smooth as anything, riding Wave Rock wasn’t straightforward. The rock may have appeared deceivingly smooth but was in fact very rough with large elevated patches of uneven surfaces. Danny’s tyres by the end of the shoot were shredded to the stitching.
