Two hundred of the world’s top Elite Men & Women took to the opening round of the UCI BMX Supercross 2013 World Cup tour at the National Cycling Centre in Manchester, UK on April 19-20.

Things kicked off on the evening of April 19 with the Time Trial run, which would whittle the field down to the top 64 in Elite Men and top 32 in Elite Women. These riders would then move on to the race program the following day. The top 16 in the men and women categories would ride a 2nd lap in the Time Trial to decide the Super Final titles.

The Elite women started the night off and it was all about British rider Shanaze Reade. Shanaze took the win in the Super Final, throwing down the fastest lap ever by a woman on the track!

In the Elite Men, there was more of a tight battle. Current World Champion Sam Willoughby had a blistering lap until a mistake ended it abruptly. Connor Fields then set the fast time but was outdone by Tory Nyhaug. However, the last rider to ride the track was Britain’s LIam Phillips and he set the quickest time to win the Super Final.

Race day took place on April 20. In the Elite Women, Shanaze Reade was unbeatable all day. USA rider Brooke Crain looked strong as well and the two would line up in the gate for the final race as the favourites. As the gate dropped, there was no denying Shanaze of the win though as she dominated the lap from start to finish.

In the Elite Men, a quality final was ensured with Liam Philips, Tory Nyhaug, Connor Fields, Joris Daudet, Anthony Dean and Sam Willoughby all getting through. Connor along with Liam Phillips had been unbeaten throughout the qualifying rounds during the day.

As the gate dropped in the final, Liam and Connor got a great start over Sam, Anthony, and Tory. Hitting the jump into the first turn is where things went haywire for Connor and Anthony as they bumped in the air and both riders got sideways. This opened up a clear path for the leader Liam Philips, giving him the opportunity to open up a gap which he never lost. Tory Nyhaug tucked in behind Liam for the 2nd with Sam Willoughby finishing 3rd.

Round 2 of the UCI BMX SX World Cup will be on May 9-11 in Santiago de Estero, Argentina.
