5 tips to master Fallout Shelter

These simple hints will guide your Vault to victory in Bethesda’s new mobile game.

Bethesda surprised everyone by announcing Fallout Shelter at E3 last week. What's more, they released it on iOS on the same day.
Fallout Shelter is a mobile management simulator that puts you in charge of your own Vault, and despite its cutesy art style, it's deceptively deep. Being an overseer can sometimes be hard, but we can easily save you some precious caps and lunchboxes, all while maintaining a healthy growing population. Here are some tips to help you survive in the wasteland.
You shall not pass While playing Fallout Shelter, you'll soon become accustomed to a swathe of raids upon your Vault – these can be incredibly deadly and it's easy to lose your precious population and stifle development and upgrades. The key to surviving raids is to strengthen your Vault door's health. At 500 caps the upgrade is expensive, but can be the key to keeping your precious Vault dwellers safe. Additionally, it's pretty wise to make use of well equipped Vault dwellers to defend the door and take the raiders on by the entrance.
Babies, babies everywhere, but not a drop to drink There are a few ways to increase your population in Fallout Shelter, but the easiest tip would be to just put two members of the opposite sex in a room and keep them there for a while. Even if the chemistry isn't quite right to start with it's a pretty quick and easy process to get more Vault dwellers.
But do be careful! Turning your Vault into a baby factory can result in a baby boom with disastrous consequences. Each pregnancy and newborn is a drain to your precious resources and abusing this tip can easily lead to the downfall of your entire Vault! Practise safe breeding with a few pregnancies at a time to avoid accidentally bankrupting yourself.

Know your dwellers A key element to succeeding in Fallout Shelter is to pay attention to the stats of your dwellers, each of them has their own set of SPECIAL stats and are suited to work in different areas of the Vault. High Endurance means that a dweller is best suited for exploration, Charisma makes a dweller more suited to work at the radio station and so on. Make sure you check them all – having a misplaced dweller can seriously hamper future development and expansion of your Vault.
Get equipped and venture out into the wasteland Before you send your poor dweller (with a high endurance or luck stat) exploring, make sure that you equip them with the right weapon and clothing to maximise their powers and increase their stats. This can also add to special skills inside of the Vault with specific rooms. Putting these to use and sending a dweller out exploring will help maximise EXP gains, earn you caps and find precious loot. Some dwellers even prefer working outside in the wasteland, and this can increase happiness.

Fallout Shelter always has three ongoing objectives that are relatively simple to hit, and these objectives can lead to some pretty excellent rewards like lunchboxes full of resources and gear.
This is a great way to earn free caps and lunchboxes with minimal effort. All you need to do is tap the radio sign and the small award icon to check them. These tasks are incredibly simple to start with, my favourite being "Sell 1 weapon or outfit". For the effort required, it's a great way to build resources and rewards while maintaining your Vault.
