Three was a charm for Jonny Walker as the KTM rider took his first Red Bull Romaniacs win at his third time of trying. Walker resisted pressure from 2013 winner Graham Jarvis to deny the defending champion his fifth win in Romania.
“I’m so pleased to have won Romaniacs,” said an ecstatic Walker. “After winning at Erzberg I really wanted to keep things going well, and I knew that beating Graham [Jarvis] here wasn’t going to be easy. But that’s what I focused on and worked hard to do and it’s happened.”
“Romaniacs is a race you have to learn, and the last two years were all about learning. I had some good days but also some bad days, but more than anything I worked out what the race is about and what you need to do to be properly prepared for it.”
Walker is in the form of his life having dominated the Red Bull Hare Scramble at Erzberg and now winning another one of Hard Enduro’s toughest events.
The race couldn't be more different to Erzberg, and to have won both races this year means a lot.
“To finally get to the finish knowing that the race was won is an amazing feeling. Romaniacs wears you down day-after-day but winning is a great feeling. The race couldn't be more different to Erzberg, and to have won both races this year means a lot.”
Wade Young joined Walker and Jarvis on the podium. The South African rider came under immense pressure from Paul Bolton, but held on to third place by a mere four minutes after 20 hours of racing. Andreas Lettenbichler completed the top five.
