Since the country’s 2007 debut in the annual pan-European bunfight, they’ve come close but have never quite had what it takes to claim the title. Young Georgian Lolitaz’s (YGL) very un-Eurovision indie-rock sound may well change those fortunes.
Immensely popular in their home country, the band – comprised of vocalist/guitarist Nika Kocharov, bassist Gia Iashvili, guitarist and keyboardist Nick Davitashvili and drummer Dima Oganesian – were hand-selected to represent Georgia with the track Midnight Gold (written by Kote Kalandadze and selected in time-honoured Song For Europe fashion by a public poll).
Raw, rocking and, refreshingly, just a little bit rough around the edges, it’s a breath of fresh air for a contest that still tends to rely on kitsch and camp to garner the votes.
YGL recently popped into Red Bull Studios Berlin to exclusively perform the track and you can see how it all went down in the player above.
The Eurovision Song Contest 2016 runs from May 10 to May 14 in Stockholm, Sweden.
