As the third and very last part of Out N About (don't miss their teaser and Part 1) has just been released, we had a chat with Alvaro Vogel, rider, producer and owner of True Color Films.
What's this True Color Films all about?
Alvaro: True Color Films is a film production company currently based in Switzerland, the heart of the Alps. I founded it over three years ago with the psychological help of my good friends Nicholas Wolken and Lisa Filzmoser. After years of hard work the crew has grown a lot, In form of new riders, more filmers, better equipment and higher quality videos. The crew has been working, travelling and making a name for itself all around the world: Switzerland, Japan, Canada, Alaska, Germany, Austria, Norway to name a few.
Along the way we have met a lot of good riders and interesting people which helped us to open our minds and push our boundaries. I guess I can say that True Color Films is now considered a reference point in the freeriding/backcountry industry, because of its unique approach to filming, editing and riding.
A couple of words on this third and last part of "Out N About"?
Alvaro: This last project is particular important for me because we finally made it to Alaska. For the most of our crew has been a dream since we started riding…
We had an amazing time there although it was our first time in such an environment and we were on a more than tight budget, but at the end it didn’t matter, we all had a blast, we flashed spines, we hiked on the smallest mountain ridges, we scared ourselves, we slept on the glacier and we came back home with a big smile on our face and with the goal to fly back this winter.
And the other two parts of it?
Alvaro: Overall I was really happy on the first segment presenting two new riders: Manuel Bernert and Levi Luggen, probably not two rookies, but they were new to the filming. They delivered two really outstanding sections. In the same chapter we also flew to Canada, more precisely to Skeena (BC). There we spent an amazing week riding deep powder and generally having a good time with the owners Lynn and Jevon.
The second installment is Thomas Feurstein’s full part. Technical riding mixed up with over tweeked grabs all filmed in Austria.
The third installment as I said is a bit more deep and personal, we portrait when Nicholas and I fell in love with snowboarding till the day we made it to AK.
Producing movies is something I love to do, it is more work than everyone can expect, but the gratitude I feel the first time I watch it in the cinema is just indescribable.
Every shot, every sequences has a precise place in my mind and on the timeline and sometime I can be too punctilios with Martin, our editor.
Another highlight of the movie is for sure the intro (you can watch it only in the first chapter). Together with Andrea (director and editor of the intro) we wanted to do something different but not to crazy that we can definitely identify ourself. We wanted to portrait the riders and show them without beanies, goggles, ect. in a total different environment from the one we have in the rest of the movie.
We had a couple of different storyboards and ideas and while going to the first location we finally decided for the Wes [Anderson] style. I’m super happy about the final result, the attention to details, the fine camera work and the bit of irony made this part really cool.
New goals and changes for this new season?
Recently Stephan Maurer joined the production team; we definitely want to produce a snowboard movie… but we are still fighting to make all this reality. Other than that we are working on different concepts developed ad hoc with top-notch riders and companies but till now nothing is fix.
Keep following us and you will see what’s is going to happen. We are looking forward to working with top athletes, outstanding companies and inspiring people.
Big shout out to Martin Potocnik, Andrea Todaro, Neil Mowbray and definitely the riders to make OUT N ABOUT so good.
