Hi, my name is Maya Gabeira. My discipline is surfing big wave. My friends call me Maya. I was born on 10 April 1987 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. My philosophy of life is always be open for new challenges. My favourite food is sushi. My favourite music is R&B.

Maya Gabeira is a big wave surfer, born in Rio de Janeiro, whose five Billabong XXL Global Big Wave Award titles in 2007–2010 and in 2012 nicely underline her talent in the water. She also won the 2009 ESPY Award for Best Female Action Sport Athlete.

As you might expect from a big wave surfer, Maya is brave – but having almost lost her life in Nazaré, suffering an accident surfing in the massive swell from the St Jude Atlantic storm in October 2013, Maya not only survived but had the courage to return to Nazaré in 2015 to surf there again, 711 days after her previous encounter with the Portuguese monster wave.
