That One Time: Surviving a tsunami in Indonesia

Australian surfer Rob Bain recounts a near-death encounter with a tsunami in the Indonesian jungle.

You should always trust your gut. And here’s a very good example of why.

In 1994, professional surfer Rob Bain planned a journey to G-Land on the Indonesian island of Java. It could have been the perfect trip – with good waves and a great crew – but intuition had argued that something was off. Still, Rob and (most of) the crew pushed forward and went anyway. The result? A tsunami, an eerie encounter with life’s dark end and an experience that is described as being 'tickled by the hand of death'.
