He is renowned throughout the world as the upstart who showed the big boys how it was done. Born into a family already steeped in motorbike history – his father Martin was the first-ever trials world champion in 1975 – Dougie rode into the limelight in the late 1980s, astride a trials bike that looked way too big for him, on a BBC TV series in the UK called Junior Kickstart. Before long, Dougie had taken trials biking to a new level, both in terms of skill and public interest.
Dougie’s first major victory came at the European championships in 1993 and he has since accumulated a trophy cabinet most international sportspeople would struggle to match. In 2003, Dougie won his 12th individual world trials title – seven coming outside and five indoors.
The switch to Enduro
Dougie then turned his hand to the discipline of enduro and has competed in some of the sport’s toughest events, including the Red Bull Hare Scramble and Red Bull Romaniacs. His success is further testament to just how rounded and skilled a rider Dougie is and why he's held in such high regard. Never one to turn down a unique challenge, Dougie added the record of continuously wheelie-ing the entire 37-mile (70km) Isle of Man TT course on September 25, 2016.
Proving that age is no barrier, Dougie continues to ride and in 2022 achieved a record-extending thirteenth win at the 2022 Scottish Six Day Trial, then repeated the feat the following year to make it 14 victories.
Growing the next generation
Although no longer competing full-time at the highest level, Dougie continues to ride selected events and remains one of trials' most influential figures. In recent years, he's taken on a leading ambassadorial role with Vertigo Motors and helped bring major events such as X-Trial Leeds back to Britain.
His involvement alongside son Alfie Lampkin – who has established himself as one of Britain's most promising young trials riders – is just one part of Dougie's growing role in supporting the next generation of riders.
