Red Bull Kite Fight 2017

Ahmedabad

The humble kite is an invention whose history stretches back over 2,000 years. But kites are still as exciting in the 21st century as they were when the Ming Dynasty in China flew them above the skies of the Forbidden City. Today, you’d be hard pressed to find a place that celebrates kite flying more passionately than Gujarat.

In the second edition of the Red Bull Kite Fight, held in 2016, Ahmedabad, Surat and Vadodara fliers thronged in numbers to show their passion, and their skill. Some epic aerial battles culminated in finding the best kite flyers in the state. This time around, we spread our wings further. Red Bull Kite Fight 2017 heads to four cities with Jaipur being added to the hunt to find the most talented kite flyer in the country.

This epic aerial battle will take place at the following venues:

January 07: Vadodara - 3 Raghavpark Society, B/H Meera Soc, Harni Road.

January 08: Jaipur - Chaugan stadium, Gangori Bazaar rd, gangori bazaar, JDA market, brahampuri.

January 08: Surat - Kailash Nagar, Nr. Majura Gate.

January 13 & 14: Ahmedabad - Alpa Park & Mamta Park society, Nr. Hirabai Kanya School B/h Rajkamal Bakery, Bhairavnath Road Manainagar.

Please note - All registrations are now closed.

Red Bull Kite Fight 2017 will celebrate one of India’s favourite festivals – Makar Sankranti – and the finals of this year’s tournament will conclude in Ahmedabad on January 14. To participate, keep these city qualifier dates in mind:

January 07: Vadodara - 3 Raghavpark Society, B/H Meera Soc, Harni Road.

January 08: Jaipur - Chaugan stadium, Gangori Bazaar rd, gangori bazaar, JDA market, brahampuri.

January 08: Surat - Kailash Nagar, Nr. Majura Gate.

January 13 & 14: Ahmedabad - Alpa Park & Mamta Park society, Nr. Hirabai Kanya School B/h Rajkamal Bakery, Bhairavnath Road Manainagar.

Red Bull Kite Fight 2017 will follow the last-man-standing survival format as in previous editions, but this time with five different types of kites that will test the limits of the kite flyer’s aerial prowess.

Guddi: The height and weight ratio of this kite is reversed, making it the best kite to fly in heavy winds.

Dedh Kanni: This kite is generally used in lower winds as it’s significantly broader than the regular kite and the participant will have to use a lot of her/his upper body strength to fly this one.

Tukkal: This is a popular design from Pakistan and a particularly “heavy” kite which requires some expert control to fly. The time and energy required to build one make it a precious object, one you wouldn’t like to lose by risking it in a kite battle. Handle with care.

Dhep: This is a kite made from slippery paper and glides through the skies easily which makes it one of the most competitive models available to participants this year.

Fighter Kite: This two-point bridle kite is the mother of all flying kites and is used widely across the country for kite fighting.

Each participant will be given these five kites. The aim of the game is to ensure the only kite flying at till the end is yours. Simple, no? The top five winners from each city will proceed to the Finals in Ahmedabad, which will take place on January 14, 2017.

The overall winner of Red Bull Kite Fight 2017 will be bestowed the title of Red Bull Kite Fight Champion 2017 and will receive a once-in-a-lifetime Red Bull experience.

What is Red Bull Kite Fight?

Red Bull Kite Fight is a competition to find the most talented kite fliers in India. The second edition of Red Bull Kite Fight took place in Ahmedabad, Surat and Vadodara in 2016 where local Jaideep Patil took the top honors.

Is it an exhibition?

Like we said, it’s a COMPETITION. How much further your kite flies is inconsequential; what matters is that you cut others’ kites and survive till the end.

Where and when is it happening?

The city qualifiers will take place on the following dates:

January 07: Vadodara - 3 Raghavpark Society, B/H Meera Soc, Harni Road.

January 08: Jaipur - Chaugan stadium, Gangori Bazaar rd, gangori bazaar, JDA market, brahampuri.

January 08: Surat - Kailash Nagar, Nr. Majura Gate.

January 13 & 14: Ahmedabad - Alpa Park & Mamta Park society, Nr. Hirabai Kanya School B/h Rajkamal Bakery, Bhairavnath Road Manainagar.

The finals will take place on January 14, 2017 in Ahmedabad.

When should I reach the venue?

Reporting time at the venue is 9:00 AM. In case of any issue reaching the venue, kindly get in touch with Mr. Bhavesh Patel on +91-9924006448. In case of any other query, you can reach out to us at kitefight@in.redbull.com.

How many kites do I get?

Five. Check out details of each type of kite above. Survive the day!

What happens if someone who’s not a participant of Red Bull Kite Fight cuts my kite?

It doesn’t matter if it’s a participant or a non-participant; once you’re kite is cut, it’s counted as gone. You don’t get an additional kite.

Can I play it safe and not cut anyone’s kite and just look to be defensive?

This is Kite Fight, not a Test Match. If anyone is found to be playing it safe and not being competitive, she/he stands the risk of either being disqualified or her/his kite being cut by the Red Bull Experts.

How dangerous can my ‘maanja' be?

It can be as dangerous as you want it to be as long as you can hold it in your hand.

Can I use Chinese ‘maanja'?

No, only Indian maanja is allowed.

Can I use my own kites?

No. To ensure a level playing field, all the kites are standardized. Hence, only Red Bull Kite Fight branded kites, provided by the organizers at the venue, are allowed.

What happens to the top five winners of each city?

The top five winners of each city will proceed to the final round on January 14.

What will the winner get?

Three things:
1. Title of Red Bull Kite Fight Champion 2017.
