Danny MacAskill is a professional street trials rider from Dunvegan on the Isle of Skye.
Danny discovered his passion for biking at the age of five. He says that he still cycles, “with that same attitude,” he had as a child.
On April 19, 2009, the young Scot had his breakthrough moment. Then 23, he released Inspired Bicycles, a five-and-a-half-minute street trials video, on YouTube. It changed his life – as of 2016, the video has had over 37 million views.
In total, Danny’s Red Bull projects – Imaginate, Epecuén and Way Back Home - have reached over 200,000,000 views, making him one of the world’s biggest YouTube stars.
After his first video streamed, things progressed quickly for Danny. He found himself featured in the New York Times and several other big publications. He joined a Hollywood production as a stuntman. He was nominated twice for Action Sportsperson of the Year at the Laureus World Sports Awards, as well as for the National Geographic Adventurer of the Year Award. Naturally, he had to give up his job as a bicycle mechanic at his local shop in Aviemore, and moved to Edinburgh to ride his bike full-time.
Asked about his heroes, Danny cites pioneering German MTB and trials rider Hans Rey - “Hans’ influence is rooted in everything I do” – and fellow legends Martyn Ashton, Martin Hawyes, Ryan Leech and Steve Peat.
Danny is constantly working on new projects and we can't wait to see what he has in store for us in the future.
