World's first backflip over a set of stairs

Kenneth Tencio backflips over a set of stairs in a world first.

While most people walk down stairs, 21-year-old Kenneth Tencio has made it one of his life goals to try and flip one.BMX pros have talked about the possibilities of doing such a trick for years, but the dangers involved have put many a rider off trying it. Kenneth is made of sterner stuff and has wanted to pull this trick off ever since he learned to backflip five years ago.

Tencio identified a set of stairs in the town of Los Lagos de Heredia in his home country of Costa Rica and took the leap one day to just go for it. This set of stairs was a big 11-stair drop from top to bottom, but the actual steps were short."I was getting impatient and, even with a hand rail and a sketchy gate in the front, it was the best option," Tencio remarked."I wasn’t worried about not flipping enough, but crashing into the rail or gate by landing in the wrong direction. So I warmed up, and placed some pads for the first few attempts. After four jumps I decided it was time to remove everything and make it happen," said Tencio."All I was thinking was to pull with all my strength and waited for the landing on both wheels. It's a really unstable trick and even the slightest error could change it all."
