When the likes of Four Tet, Floating Points and Gilles Peterson turn mentor, you’re going to want to listen to the results. Percussionist Sarathy Korwar is one of the first musicians to be supported by the Steve Reid Foundation, which supports emerging talent and musicians in crisis with skill-shares from top producers. They helped release his first record, out now on Ninja Tune. But his unique sound, cross-pollinating his Hindustani heritage with jazz and electronics, was already firmly in place.
A pretty dazzling debut album, Day To Day is also a perfectly timed reminder of music’s debt to migration. It could only have been made by a musician schooled in both the classical tabla and the western drum kit, who grew up with both Indian folk music and John Coltrane. It writhes with polyrhythms and prickles with ideas. It’s also woven through with hypnotic field recordings from rural Gujarat. There Korwar spent time with the migrant Siddi people, who travelled to India from Africa back in the early ADs.
Korwar has compared his album to the handmade rag quilts made by the Sidis, "These amazing collages of colour". You can get a feel for the extraordinary variety of colours and textures in play as he performs two tracks from the record exclusively for RedBull.com/Music.
