You could be forgiven for thinking that only guys would have the strength and ability to climb some of the hardest routes in the world – but the girls are catching up fast. Meet Angela Eiter.

This fall, the Austrian climber completed two incredibly hard routes just a week apart. The first was Zauberfee, which only a handful of men have climbed, and four days later, Hades, a nearby route graded at 9a.

It's known for being a tough route for it's grade!

“The route (Zauberfee) is graded 8c. It's severely overhanging, and 20m high,” says Eiter. “I've had it on my mind for some time as it's one of the hardest routes in Arco. There were three moves I knew would be a serious challenge, but I wanted to stick to the project.” Despite the crimpy, sharp holds and difficult moves, Eiter sent the route, becoming the first female climber to do so. Was she pleased? Definitely. “It's known for being a tough route for it's grade!”

What's next for the four-time world champion and newest member of the 9a women's club? Hopefully, another big climb – she's got her sights set on one more 9a before the year is out.
