Shake Up Your Run Routine – Do It On an Iceberg

Seb Montaz shares POV and drone footage of his adventure on an Icelandic glacier.
By Alison Mann

It was through a chance sighting that Seb Montaz found an incredible iceberg to run on. He had actually been shooting surfing in Iceland (!) when he spied iceberg debris in the distance. Venturing onto a glacier he found icebergs, frozen in a lake, and being a trail runner from Chamonix there was no way he could pass up the chance to run on the ice.

Check out the awesome video he made while there in the player above.

Could you live on an iceberg for a year?

Ice is apparently a great surface to run on, which explains his desire to run on the iceberg. “I like to run on a special surface," Montaz says. "A sandy volcano, a canyon, and running on ice is one of the most enjoyable! There are so many features you just can’t find on other surfaces.”

As for the location, the iceberg was found in a glacial lagoon in southern Iceland. It’s called Fjallsárlón and the pieces of the Vatnajökull glacier are carried there before breaking up and ending up at sea. It freezes in the winter, so it’s possible to access the glacier.

“The icebergs are not far away, but people usually don’t go there,” says Montaz. Being a mountaineer, he had ski touring equipment so was able to explore the glacier and the icebergs.
