Whether it’s climbing into a volcano or windsurfing down one of the heaviest waves in the world, there is no doubt that today’s explorers are pushing the limits.
Exploration (especially in this season's Explorers on Red Bull TV) is about feeding your heart’s desire to see, travel, and bring your passion to the next level in uncharted territory. It’s about seeing and experiencing the tiny world we live in, in a way that we have never seen before. Today, exploration is not necessarily about finding a new island or country, it’s about taking discovery to the next level.
This can pretty much guarantee it won't be easy – logistics aside. All of the explorers in Explorers Season 4 realised things don't always go according to plan. And so their story of exploration becomes about how you adapt.
In some cases, like in the story of three skiers' journey to Onekotan: The Lost Island, it was the weather that slowed the explorers down. In Mission Amazon it was the gear malfunctioning. And in Citadel, it was the mountain that literally stopped the mountaineers in their tracks. And so the stories become as much about overcoming challenges as they are about exploration.
Today, exploration is about asking yourself ‘can I go there?’ ‘can I push myself to that level?’ and ‘what’s stopping me?’ So in 2016, with the world entirely discovered, perhaps modern exploring is less about finding a new place, but rather finding yourself in an incredible, wild environment.
