Bernd Zangerl spent his childhood among the mountains and valleys of Flirsch am Arlberg in his homeland of Austria. The “natural-born free-climber”, as he likes to call himself, began his alpine climbing career in 1994, and by 16, Zangerl had already ascended to the top of the Grand Capucin in the Mount Blanc region.
Zangerl was forced to dedicate himself to sport climbing after his alpine career was cut short by a landslide in the South Face in 1998. But he turned what would have been an unfortunate break for many climbers into a career-defining change of direction.
Within a few years, Zangerl had firmly established himself in the local climbing elite and by 1999 he’d discovered his true passion: bouldering.
In the following years, he spent every spare minute among the rocks. He has since conquered some of the most difficult routes in the bouldering world, including Anam Cara, Memento and Viva La Evolution.
In recent years, Zangerl has travelled the world in search of new challenges. He’s appeared in numerous films and is always busy bringing his sport to rapt audiences at film festivals and lectures. He’s also broken new ground in bouldering among the tricky foothills of the Indian Himalayas.
