Not content with mastering hang gliding, paragliding and BASE jumping alone, Austrian action hero Hannes Arch also added Red Bull Air Race World Champion to his string of impressive titles after just two seasons competing in the world’s fastest motorsport. Now, Hannes is undoubtedly one of the most exciting, successful and driven Red Bull Air Race pilots.
Born in Styria in Austria, a young Hannes found his love of the outdoors and extreme sports in the mountains of his homeland. As a teenager, he qualified as a mountain guide, and expanded on his love of climbing by taking up hang gliding, paragliding and BASE jumping before turning his hand to powered flight. He quickly became a proficient pilot and coped well with the mental and physical demand of the sport, which isn't exactly suprising when you consider that before qualifying as a Red Bull Air Race pilot, Hannes was the 2006 European Aerobatic Champion in the Freestyle Category.
Hannes is constantly searching for ways to improve his plane and his performance in a bid to stay one step ahead of his long-time rival Paul Bonhomme. After an edge-of-the-seat season in 2010, Arch finished just behind the British pilot, who took the championship title.
In 2014, Arch returned to the Red Bull Air Race World Championship, resurrecting his close-fought rivalry with defending champion Bonhomme. However, it was another Brit, Nigel Lamb, who appeared to be the one to beat that season. Despite winning two races, Arch just couldn't match Lamb's consistency and once again finished the season in second place. As for 2015, Arch is looking to reclaim his title and will stop at nothing to get it back!Read more
