The 2013 UCI Cross-Country World Cup continues to spring surprises with a first time winner in the women’s race at Nove Mesto.
Tanja Zakelj of Slovenia grabbed the race lead on the fourth lap and pulled away from the chasing pack though she was nearly caught by Poland’s Maja Wloszczowska as she approached the finishing straight.
Zakelj and Wloszczowska are tied atop the overall women’s cross-country standings with 400 points each; Zakelj gets the lead due to her race win in the Czech Republic.
In the men’s race, current World Champion Nino Schurter came back from a poor race in round one to win for the second consecutive year in Nove Mesto, and also take the overall lead in the men’s standings.
