Alex Kennedy hails from London, England, and by all accounts, this rider is doing things the right way. He rides how he wants, for the sponsors he wants, and does it with an amazing style that’s all his own. He runs four pegs, grinds on both sides, spins both ways and does a proper job of pushing the limits of street riding today.
Taking life as it happens, AK looks out for his health and focuses on maintaining a positive mindset in all aspects of life. Find out a few things you might not have known about one of the most progressive street riders out there, and check out his style in the video above.
1. A few people have pegged you as somewhat of a picky eater. What kind of thought do you put into the food you eat and what's the hardest part about maintaining that diet when you travel as much as you do?
Yes, my thinking is that the food we consume correlates directly with mood, stamina, energy levels and overall performance. I try to stick to high quality, nutrient-dense and easily-digestible organic food. Obviously this isn't always available whilst on the road so I make sure that I always carry a bag full of natural supplements and snacks.
2. If you had to choose three tricks that feel the best to you, what would they be and why?
Toboggans, because they’re done with a few simple and easy movements. They also feel very stylish when they’re fully extended. Crankarm grinds because I love the feeling of sliding sideways on a part of the bike that isn't very sturdy. The last would be tailwhips. I don't do them very much anymore but the feeling of connecting both feet to the pedals after whipping the bike around is quite satisfying!
Putting effort into something you love will always pay off.
3. What is it outside of BMX that keeps you motivated in your life? What other things are you into?
Just life itself in its many forms -- nature, culture, art, music and food are my top choices. Basically anything that enlivens my soul and keeps me in balance. This includes anything from meditation, to yoga, to dancing, to eating healthy as well as riding itself.
4. Everyone has a few favorite riders on their list. Name three riders who have influenced you either in the past or in current day.
Ruben Alcantara for his individuality, Garrett Reynolds for obvious reasons and Mike Aitken for his style.
5. What would you say to someone who wants to someday go pro and live the life that you do?
I would say to simply ride for the love of riding. Putting effort into something you love will always pay off.
6. BMX and travel go hand in hand, especially for a pro. What is one of your favorite destinations and where would you recommend fellow BMX riders check out if they have the itch to travel?
I enjoy going to many places for many different reasons but Tel Aviv, Israel, is great and you can't go wrong with Barcelona, Spain!
