XC Women (WCO)
Previous U23 World Champion Tanja Zakelj has been victorious on the World Cup circuit several times this season and comes into Pietermaritzburg with confidence. But her competitors bring their own strengths: experience in Gunn-Rita Dahle Flesjaa, consistency from Eva Lechner and ambition in Sabine Spitz.

XC Men (XCO)
The 2012 World Champ, Nino Schurter, will attempt to defend his title against previous winners Julien Absalon (2004-2007), Jose Hermida (2010) and Jaroslav Kulhavy (2011). Kulhavy’s World Cup campaign has been lackluster this season, but as he proved at the Olympics he has the ability to peak for any one-day performance.

The course isn’t super techical, but its many short-yet-tech sections could be conducive to Absalon’s usual offensive plays -- i.e. quick bursts up climbs. Will his attempts displace Schurter, Marco Fontana and the onslaught of the international competitors? This’ll be a good one to watch...

XC Eliminator (XCE)
A man-made steeplechase aboard endurance bicycles, the Swiss-invented cycling event will give endurance athletes a second chance to earn a World Championship title this week. With Eliminator on Sunday, expect to see all the heavy-hitters gunning for another rainbow jersey.

Downhill (DHI)
An absolute clash of titans, the fight for Downhill World Champion pits the finest from each country against each other. Uncharacteristically, this year’s pedal-heavy racetrack positions gravity against the gravity riders. Who has the fitness -- lungs and legs -- to wear the crown? Aaron Gwin and Stevie Smith wield North America’s hopes for gold against the world’s best.
