Showcasing Rampage to all, Microsoft provides an unseen and immersive online experience to the web.
The Red Bull Rampage has grown from a backwoods throwdown to a global benchmark-setting action sports event.
During finals on October 13, a live webcast allowed at-home viewers to vote for their favorite riders and moves that were seen in real time around the world.
To provide further insight into this amazing event, Microsoft were tasked to update the Rampage site using the new Internet Explorer 11's functionality. The result is a detailed and immersive experience that delivers all of the best highlights from Red Bull Rampage.
The site showcases a 3D map of the mountain that illustrates the path of each rider down the mountain, along with rider bios, videos from the most epic runs and an exclusive “behind the scenes” video.
The Red Bull Rampage site takes advantage of the latest web standards like HTML5 and WebGL, demonstrating the real-world possibilities for 3D graphics and providing a great example of what’s possible in a modern browser like Internet Explorer 11.
Due to its remote location, only about a thousand lucky spectators are able to actually attend Red Bull Rampage.
Using 3D geographic data to create a geographically correct three-dimensional model of the Rampage course, a small GPS device was attached to every bike to capture each athlete's exact location during their ride. A timestamp aligns the GPS data with the video footage to locate each rider on the mountain. The combination of these three data sources (3D map, GPS data and rider footage) is what has allowed the creation of this never before seen experience on the web.
While navigating the Red Bull Rampage site, you can interact with each rider by clicking anywhere on the interactive 3D map and you’ll be instantly dropped into their exact location on the course in their rider video.
Or you can just sit back and track the physical position of the rider on an interactive 3D map as you watch footage of the ride, seeing the real-time position of the rider as he makes his way down the course.
The experience is a new understanding of the incredible athleticism and innovation of sport showcased at Rampage, which is only able to be achieved using HTML5 and the latest browser technologies available in modern browsers like IE 11 -- and allowing people everywhere to truly feel what it’s like to be in attendance and experience this unique event from a tablet, PC or mobile device.
