The XCO track at Vallnord featured some very technical downhill sections but the riders biggest concern was the the altitude that the climbs reached. Some 2,000 metres above sea level.

Pre-season favourite for many, Barel smashed the first round of the EWS which prompted some to predict a white wash. It didn't work out though. His practicing of those stages sparked controversy and a five minute time penalty at the Whistler round scuppered things further. Fourth in Finale.
