Nicolai Bikes, based deep in the heart of rural Germany, are about as far removed from a ‘normal’ bike company as you'll ever find. Their factory, located in a nineteenth century farm, is easy to miss. Only the occasional waft of freshly-applied powder coat gives it away.
To see a Nicolai being built is to want one. The amount of detail and craftsmanship that pours into each frame is incredible. Even the smallest alloy parts from models long since lost from the catalogue are nestled neatly in drawers awaiting fanatical owners requesting a revamp.
We were granted an access all areas pass to the Lubrechsten factory to follow the early hours of the life of a Nicolai bike.
