The European team won both games Monday night to take charge of Group B at LoL Worlds.
No team has dominated Group B in the initial stages of this week’s League of Legends World Championship. Some predicted that Korean team Samsung Galaxy Ozone or Europe’s Fnatic would storm their way through the four team bracket – but that’s hardly been the case through Day 2 as both teams have looked vulnerable at times.
Fnatic, however, certainly looked the strongest on Monday night. They opened the tournament with a surprising loss to North America’s third seeded Vulcun Techbargains, with questions raised about the curious decision to use Yorick on the top lane. But they followed up with a win against Team Mineski in a quick 24-minutes and on Day 2 flexed their way through a convincing win against Ozone. Fnatic racked up 21 kills and only 6 deaths and enjoyed a 16K gold advantage against the Koreans. Estonia’s Johannes "puszu" Uibos in particular had a spectacular game for Fnatic – earning 8 kills, 1 death, and 11 assists as an AD Carry with Corki. Jungler Lauri "Cyanide" Happonen also had a solid performance with Aatrox with a 5/0/9 line.
Then at the end of the night, Fnatic took down previously undefeated Gambit BenQ with a major route despite the fact that the Russian team took down Fnatic’s outer ring of towers early. By the end of the match, they earned 21 champion kills to 4 deaths and gained a substantial gold advantage throughout. Puszu finished his MVP type day with 11 kills and no deaths – this time with the fearsome archer Varus. They also managed to keep Gambit BenQ’s expert mid laner Alex Ich in check, as he managed only 1 kill and no assists with Twisted Fate.
Samsung Galaxy Ozone, meanwhile, didn’t have a totally lost night. In Monday’s first game, they dispatched with the overmatched Team Mineski. Ozone’s AD Carry Gu "imp" Sung-bin had 11 kills, 13 assists and only 2 deaths with Ezrael. Vulcun also earned a 1-1 split on the night with a win against Team Mineski.
Here’s a look at the Group B standings after two days:
Gambit BenQ 3-1
Samsung Ozone 2-2
