It wasn't easy, but Team Dignitas' new Dota 2 roster pays off with a victory over Typical Mistakes.
Team Dignitas walked away from the MLG Fall Dota 2 Invitational with a $10,000 prize and an invitation to November's International competition in Columbus, but it wasn’t a breeze. Dignitas, whose roster has undergone a complete overhaul since Valve's The International 3, struggled at times – including a loss to runners up Typical Mistakes in the first game of the Grand Final.
"Going in I thought it would be a bit easier than how it all ended," said Dignitas' Theeban "1437" Siva after the tournament ended. "I guess we underestimated them a little bit."
Here’s a breakdown of this weekend’s action:
Team Dignitas vs Typical Mistakes: Round 1
The drafting phase saw Typical Mistakes allow Dignitas to pick up both Io and a Batrider, leaving spectators wondering whether there were some secret strategy about to be deployed. At first Typical Mistakes' approach seemed to be paying dividends. Despite giving up first blood, the team pushed over two of Dignitas' bottom towers in just under three minutes. Unfortunately for the underdogs, Dignitas began to wrestle back control. A strong performance by Steven "Korok" Ashworth as Queen of Pain and some comprehensive team wipes left Typical Mistakes underfarmed and unable to claw their way back into the game.
Shadowfiend Eats Cake (noM) vs The Joikernaught
noM picked up the stronger draft in terms of early laning, but it looked likely the team would dominate their rivals. TJ may have had weaker lane potential, they demonstrated far better synergy. Despite consistently being top of the chart in terms of creep score, Relic's Shadow Fiend was repeatedly shut down and his team failed to defend him. An 18 minute gem pickup from Windrunner meant noM was deprived of vision and Weaver functionality. A seven minute 3k gold advantage for The Joikernaught had turned into 34k by the time noM called GG.
The Joikernaught vs Team Dignitas
An early attempted gank on Exiled's Batrider failed to score a kill for Dignitas but 1437 managed a first blood on Joik's Rubick. That was swiftly followed by Exiled going down to Dignitas on bottom lane. 5-0 at 5 minutes became 7-0 at 7 minutes in Dignitas' favor. TJ got onto the scoreboard close to the ten minute mark by finishing off Scott "Bleek" Jensen's Mirana. An ill-advised cogs on Storm Spirit by Korok's Clockwork backfired when it was met with an infest bomb. TJ also managed a pick-off kill on Frankie "Inphinity" Pravo's Weaver, but ultimately they couldn't pull together a comeback.
Typical Mistakes vs Shadowfiend Eats Cake (noM)
An invisibility rune on Andrew "Jubei" Evelyn's Alchemist led to Typical Mistakes preventing an early gank on Alan "RyuuboruZ-" Andersen's Queen of Pain. After a dewarding scuffle on bottom lane, first blood went to Typical Mistakes although their Weaver fell shortly after. What looked like a pick off on Alchemist turned into a kill on Relic's Puck as the latter found himself surrounded by Typical Mistakes. noM seemed to be making progress when they took a tier 1 tower, sniped the opposition's courier and scored a kill on Visage in quick succession. A well-placed Naga ultimate took four of the five Typical Mistakes heroes down, but noM had lost too much ground. The GG came with two barracks gone at 35 minutes.
Typical Mistakes vs The Joikernaught
It was a less than stellar start for Typical Mistakes as Jason "Sleisel" Kim's Lifestealer was forced to deny himself to creeps, but the team did draw first blood with a kill on Saelar's Mirana after she got stuck in trees on top lane. Of the two teams, Typical Mistakes had the better vision and rotation and by 25 minutes Typical Mistakes were knocking on The Joikernaught's base. The Joikernaught couldn't hold Typical Mistakes back for long and the GG saw TM heading to face Team Dignitas in the Grand Final.
Team Dignitas vs Typical Mistakes
A Spectre haunt was on the menu for first blood and took down Korok's Batrider. A handful of tracked kills thanks to Clay "Cak3z" Winkler's Bounty Hunter saw the Typical Mistakes team rapidly extend their gold advantage. Korok managed to pick up a blink dagger around the 13 minute mark, but Spectre's 15 minute radiance repeatedly melted the Dignitas team. When the scoreboard hit 20-2 (before the clock had even ticked over to 20 minutes), Dignitas threw in the towel.
The game started badly for Typical Mistakes with a kill on Sleisel's Medusa, but Team Dignitas didn't pull ahead convincingly. What could have been a clean kill on Bounty instead led to Robert "Bdiz" Tinnes going down too. The match swung back and forth with Dignitas gradually asserting their dominance but Typical Mistakes retaliating in bursts, at one point taking the opposition's first and second tier mid towers. Some bad decisions - going on Bleek's Lifestealer while he had Aegis and Medusa heading to farm the jungle while there was no vision of the enemy team - ultimately cost Typical Mistakes the match.
First blood went to Team Dignitas but Bdiz' Bane fell shortly after as he chased Alch deep into Dire territory. Typical Mistakes weren't able to keep the Dignitas carries from heavily outfarming them and a teamwipe at 20 minutes demonstrated that the team was very much on the backfoot. Dignitas struggled to bring proceedings to a neat end, but Typical Mistakes couldn't turn the tide of the game and eventually conceded. Dignitas were crowned MLG Full Sail champions and will head to MLG Columbus.
