Red Bull Party Wave 2016

Queen's Beach - Waikiki, Honolulu

Red Bull Party Wave is a test of physical endurance and skill, not to mention creativity and imagination. You and your teammates build a surfing craft, trick it out, design costumes and create and perform a skit. Oh, and once that's done, you have to ride a wave together. So sketch up your idea for the ultimate surf craft and send it in for a chance to be one of 20 teams selected to compete on Waikiki Beach!

Dragon Boats

Do you like dragon boats? It’s not a question you hear every day, but it’s the one our defending champions are asking. Last year they surfed their way to the top prize as Queen of Queens, but this time around they’ll be outfitted on the kind of majestic dragon you might see at a Chinese New Year parade. Riding on a sustainable vessel made entirely of recycled materials, they hope to bring good fortune to all — in the form of monster waves.

Joe Specials

They are lumberjacks and they’re okay! They sleep all night and they work all day! No, this is not a Monty Python skit, it’s the Red Bull Party Wave persona of the Joe Specials. They’re “the real deal” kind of lumberjacks, straight from the backwoods — no hipster city boys here. And dressed in their finest flannels, they’re looking to get their beards wet in the waves at Waikiki. Because log rides aren’t just made for theme parks — for Joe Specials, it’s a lifestyle.

Team Blue Planet

Anyone can get on a party boat. But it takes a special group of superheroes to navigate the swell on a potty boat. Fortunately we have the team from Blue Planet Surf to show us how it’s done. They’ll be riding a 25-foot SUPsquatch with an outrigger attached, but that’s not what makes this ride a safe haven. You can spot them dressed in the masks and capes of your favorite comic book characters, sitting on recycled toilets, and hoping to be #1 in every sense.

Bella the Bounty Hunter

You can run, but you can’t hide when Dog The Bounty Hunter appears in the lineup. Paying homage to the iconic fist of justice from their home state of Colorado, this team looks to represent the 303 in true Dog fashion. Riding the world’s first floating Escalade, they’ll be combing their mullets and pulling on their toughest leather vests as they look to show that when Coloradans put their mind to something, they don’t stop until it’s done.

Musubi Ninjas

Walk into any place in Hawaii that serves food and there’s a good chance you’ll be offered musubi. The seaweed, rice, and spam combo has provided nourishment for many a surf, but it’s not often you’ll see it provide the actual surf. That’s right — the Musubi Ninjas will be decked out in their ninja robes and riding the waves on a giant plate of their favorite Hawaiian snack. Will they tumble their way to victory, or will they be chewed up by the competition? Stay tuned.

Team Kooks

How could we throw a competition in Waikiki without having a few kooks in it? Actually, these self-proclaimed beach bums certainly know what they’re doing in the water, but Tom LaPlante and his team are embracing their “inner kookdom.” Because we were all kooks at one point — and what better place than the Red Bull Party Wave for a bunch of kooks to transform into champions?

Planet Pandora

Straight from the big screen and planet Pandora, we bring you the Avatars. They’ll be in full character as Na’vi tribe members, blue skin and all. Riding on a built-from-scratch paddle board that they’ve turned into a bright orange pterodactyl, they’ll certainly be the most colorful group in the water. And regardless of how they do, we know that James Cameron will be proud.

Surfin' Santas

It’s Christmas in August on Waikiki when Mike “Hucker” Clark trades in his BMX wheels for some fins and his surfin’ Santas come to town. They’re making a list, checking it twice, coming down from the North Pole— or maybe the North Shore— to find out who’s been naughty or nice. They’re sure to have a few surprises up their red sleeves, because we know that these Santas won’t show up empty-handed.

WASUP Super Heroes

What’s cooler than going out on the water for a stand-up session? How about going out for one in your wheelchair. That’s where the Adaptive Freedom Foundation, a non-profit organization based in Honolulu, comes in. They’re building customized paddleboards to provide the opportunity for anyone with disabilities to go out and paddle in a wheelchair and enjoy a sport that previously wouldn’t have been possible. That’s the spirit of Aloha we can all get behind.

Team Toga

What happens when you get together a bunch of fighters from the MMA gym Kakaako and tell them to enter the Red Bull Party Wave? Naturally, they’ll throw on some togas and turn this party into a scene from Animal House. They’re shaped like Greek gods, dressed like Greek gods, and hoping to surf like Hawaiian champions. It might just make you want to throw your hands up and SHOUT!

JOB and Friends

Spend any time on the North Shore and you’re bound to see Jamie O’Brien and his crew of friends getting into to all kinds of shenanigans. And now these hard-chargers are bringing a little bit of the Pipeline persona to Waikiki. And when one of the best surfers in the world gets a chance to build his own board to ride, it’s sure to be an attention grabber. Who knows what they’ll be up to this time, but if we know anything about JOB, it’s that he’ll be having fun.

Yabba Dabba Do’s

Flintstones, meet the Flintstones. Bringing a little bit of Bedrock to Oahu, this modern stone age family is out to push the limits of their famous wheels. The classic footmobile gets a little island twist as Fred, Wilma, and the gang take it for its maiden voyage in the waves. We’re sure that’ll be a little easier on their feet, and it’s sure to be a yabba dabba doo time for all.
