Whether you’re a casual racing gamer or a hardcore Formula One nut, F1 2013 has got you covered. The fifth F1 title developed by Codemasters studios boasts plenty of new game modes and features as well as a nice nostalgia trip, classic Formula One cars and tracks from the 1980s and 1990s.
The classics are the big addition to this year’s game. With F1 2013: Classic Edition, players get the chance to race against legends like Alain Prost, Michael Schumacher and Mika Hakkinen in classic Lotus’, Williams’ and Ferraris. There’s also some classic tracks; Estoril, Brands Hatch, Jerez and Imola but a real highlight is that you aren’t just limited to racing the classic cars on the classic tracks, allowing you to take a turbo charaged monster from the 80s around a complex modern track like Singapore or Malaysia.
F1 2013 certainly gives gamers that freedom. For the pick-up and play gamer, the game is packed with short but fun features. Time Trail and Time Attack mode allow for flat out racing, while Scenario Mode - replacing last year’s Champions Mode – sets racing challenges, be it passing enough drivers to win or holding onto a points finish on warn tyres. Season Challenge meanwhile allows you to complete a Formula One career in ten short races, working your way up from the tail end of the grid to the race winning teams but without it taking you months.
This year Codemasters have focussed a lot on giving you the full Formula One experience, and it shows. Gamers can start from the Young Driver Test in Abu Dhabi – also a chance for casual fans to get clued up on Formula One – and work their way to the top in a five year career mode. Also 100% races are now much more doable thanks to in-game saving, so even if you don’t have two hours to spare you can still experience the thrill of a full Formula One race, with tyre wear, pit stops, penalties and safety cars.
F1 2013 is certainly the best Formula One game Codemasters have produced and with next gen consoles coming later this year, we can expect even more from them in the future.
