Originally built in 1969, Misano has gone through several phases of modernisation in the last 20 years to transform it into one of the elite racing circuits in Europe. In the 1990s, the track was lengthened, the paddock extended, and pits, garages and a press centre were added along with the first stands. In 2005, the circuit took a new direction with the track relaid to allow racing to go clockwise, and in 2012 the track was renamed Misano World Circuit Marco Simoncelli in honour of the late MotoGP star who was from just down the road in Cattolica.
