Local hero Pol Espargaro wins Moto2 race while top five Moto3 riders also hail from Spain.
Salom takes the win in Barcelona
Luis Salom claimed victory at the Gran Premi Aperol de Catalunya to take the Moto3 World Championship lead. A tactical ride from the Red Bull KTM Ajo rider delivered his third win of the year and maintained his 100% podium record this season.
Salom was happy to take a place at the rear of the leading pack in the early stages of the race in an effort to conserve his Dunlops. He then made his move six laps from the end to hit the front in time to take the chequered flag.
Alex Rins and Maverick Viñales completed the podium as the top five places were filled by Spaniards. The result in Barcelona sees Salom leading the 2013 Moto3 World Championship from Viñales by five points.
Local hero Espargaro wins at Montmelo
Pol Espargaro maintained his impressive start to this year’s Moto2 campaign by winning in Barcelona. Despite surrendering his pole to team-mate Esteve Rabat, Espargaro was able to come back and pass on Lap 17.
However, Rabat would not take defeat lying down and attacked until crossing the finish line less than one tenth of a second behind Espargaro. Tom Luthi came home third to reappear on the Moto2 podium for the first time since Brno 2012.
A fourth place finish for Scott Redding allowed the British rider to keep on top of the 2013 Moto2 World Championship while Espargaro’s win saw him leapfrog from fifth to second in the standings.
