Twelve months ago, things weren’t looking good for Marc Coma.

The Spanish enduro rider was competing in the Rally of Morocco, a key part of many riders’ preparations for the Dakar Rally, when he came off his KTM on Stage Three, dislocating his left shoulder.

He was flown back home to Spain directly and ruled out of the Dakar for 2013, denying him the chance to add a fourth win to his tally at the event.

Fast forward a year and things look a lot sunnier for Coma, with the Spaniard finishing second at the very same rally that put him out of the Dakar last year.

“Finally, second in the rally and second in the World Championship,” Coma told his followers on Facebook.

“[I’m] happy with the performance of the bike and thanks to the whole KTM team for the great job. Now it’s time to start to prepare Dakar 2014.”

Coma will now be looking to stay fit and healthy in the months before the Dakar starts on January 5th 2014, in order to take the fight to his main rival, five-time Dakar winner Cyril Despres, who’ll be competing for the first time on his new Yamaha YZ450F Rally having dramatically switched from KTM earlier this year.

Meanwhile Honda’s Team HRC will also be looking to be in the mix at Dakar after taking the overall victory in Morocco – and the World Championship title – with rider Paulo Concalves.

Concalves’ Team HRC team-mate Helder Rodrigues, who set the second fastest time on the final stage ahead of American rider Kurt Caselli, said: “Paulo has won the championship and he’s won the race. I think we won almost every day and I think it’s been perfect. It’s a great start for the Dakar and we will go into it with a lot of strength.”

The Dakar Rally begins in Rosario, Argentina on January 5th 2014. Head to the official event website here.
