Ellie Goulding, the 26-year-old songwriter, is currently on tour in support of her latest album, 'Halcyon,' which came out last October on Polydor Records and features collaborations with Tinie Tempah and Calvin Harris. Then she hits the road with Bruno Mars in June. We caught up with her recently to talk about the inspiration behind her latest music video, bras being thrown on stage and her favorite cuts from 'Halcyon.'
You recently premiered your video for 'Explosions.' Tell us about the video concept.
The concept was to give a small insight into my tour, my relationship with my band, and my performance of the track. It is particularly resounding for me because it is very personal, and I wanted the video to show that.
Are you sick of hearing 'Lights' on the radio yet? Does that ever get old?
I don't think I could ever be sick of it, but yeah, I can safely say that I am done with listening to it voluntarily!
What songs on the album are your favorites?
'My Blood' because it gives me so much hope every time I perform it and it encapsulates a lot about me as a writer and singer. I am truly proud of it because I feel that it has a lot of soul. I love my track with Calvin Harris, 'I Need Your Love,' just because it is a huge banger and is so enjoyable to perform and watch everyone go crazy!
What inspires your songs?
A lot of different things: where I grew up, my childhood, my friends then and my friends now, relationships and broken hearts and sadness, loneliness and hope.
When you’re not making music, what are you up to?
Running, eating, reading, watching obscure films.
Are you still running six miles a day? Do you have plans to do any more marathons?
Next half marathon is in April. But no I don't run six miles a day anymore. It's just impossible with my schedule. Maybe if I spend a few months at home writing new stuff.
There’s a photo on your Facebook with you holding up a bunch of bras that were thrown at you at a recent Boston show. Do a lot of bras end up on an Ellie Goulding stage?
For some reason girls were going crazy at that show. I don't usually get a lot of bras… Recently in Singapore, I got roses, which was awesome. I only ever saw that at Operas.
What’s on your agenda for the rest of 2013?
A lot of touring… I don't think I stop until September.
Anything else we should know about you?
I love cheese.
