Behind the scenes of the hardcore punk band's secret recording session with the Odd Future duo.
Trash Talk recently came into the Red Bull Studio LA with MellowHype, the name of Odd Future's Hodgy Beats and Left Brain's side project, to work on an upcoming album.
“No one knows about it,” said Hodgy over a lunch of In ‘n’ Out burgers (with Sriracha). “That shit is on the super low.”
Hodgy sat between Left Brain and Trash Talk frontman Lee Spielman and bassist Spencer Pollard. “We spent last week jamming and shit, finishing up writing and stuff – Hodgy and Vyron came in,” said Pollard, referring to Left Brain’s real name.
Trash Talk, a hardcore punk band from Sacramento, California, is on Odd Future’s label, which put out last year’s highly rated ‘119’ album. The new album will also share the last one's producer.
“We recorded a record last year with a guy named Chris Rakestraw,” said Spielman. “We liked what he did with that record, so we brought him in to work outside of his element in a different space because he knows how we work, as far as how we record drums or how Garrett (Stevenson, the band's guitarist) or Spencer want to get tones and how stressful it is to deal with me in the vocal booth.”
Spielman added, “He also has thousands of fart sounds.”
Pollard concurred. “Yeah, he’s got a high number of fart sounds – hundreds – from most of the sessions,” he said.
“He’s got Danzig farts, which are hella rare,” said Spielman. “Have you heard Danzig fart? Cause he has – and he has it recorded.”
