Six teams from around the US will have 72 hours to create something utterly awesome.
Six of the nation’s most industrious teams of savvy inventors will compete in three straight dizzying days of dreaming, tinkering and tweaking at the Red Bull Creation contest this week. The Makers are making their mark on Brooklyn during the Northside Festival at McCarren Park in Brooklyn.
The finalists were chosen during the TurBULL Encabulator round, where they were charged with transforming an LED lighting-compatible circuitboard into a new invention and capturing the build process on video.
The qualifying entries were as idiosyncratic as the annual contest itself. The i3 team from Detroit made a multi-colored LED interactive display board called the 'RainbowTron.' North Street Labs, based in Portsmouth, Virginia, created 'Tic Tac Woah' a whimsical life size tic tac toe board. 1.21 Jigawatts of Minneapolis based their '99 Red (Bull)oons' project on Nina Hagen’s classic 1980s song '99 Red Balloons.'
The theme for the 2013 edition of Red Bull Creation will be announced Wednesday evening before the competition kicks off Thursday morning at the tech and innovators showcase, NExT, which is part of the newly expanded eight-day Northside Festival.
"It’ll be completely different from the qualifier,” Ben Arcand, of 1.21 Jigawatts, explained to Secrets of the City. “We’ll fly in [today], get settled, and then we have the kickoff party at 7 p.m. We’ll learn there of any restrictions, and the theme."
The build will be live streamed at RedBull.com/Creation starting at 8 a.m. Thursday. The teams will present their creation to the audiences Sunday, when the winners will be announced.
