Making the beat for his new track, 'Bird's Eye View,' with Raekwon, Joey Bada$$ and Black Thought.
Beat-master Statik Selektah's 'Extended Play' album is out this week via Duck Down Music and his own Showoff Records label. With rappers like Freddie Gibbs, Prodigy, Action Bronson, Termanology and Talib Kweli throwing verses on Statik's topnotch productions, it's a diverse collection of 18 monster tracks.
In this new 'Making The Beat' clip, Statik brings us into his studio to see the creative process behind 'Bird's Eye View,' a new song from 'Extended Play' that features verses by Joey Bada$$, the Wu-Tang Clan's Raekwon, and the Roots' Black Thought.
It begins with a hot soul sample. The sample gets chopped. The drums drop. Horns and organ are added. And Statik has once again made beat magic. He also reveals that the beat was originally an unreleased Nas remix, of which he graciously shares a few bars. Then he talks about working with Raekwon, and how Black Thought and Joey Bada$$ recorded their verses in his closet.
