I saw the Smashing Pumpkins play the USAir Arena, in Washington, D.C, in 1996. It was my first BIG rock show. It was loud, disorienting, and overwhelming. The band was touring in support of its third album, 'Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness.' When they played 'Bullet With Butterfly Wings,' time stopped, the coliseum shook, everyone went berserk. It was magic.
The same thundering madness happened in March, when the Smashing Pumpkins played Red Bull Sound Select: 120 Hours In Austin. And they tried to capture it on the upcoming 'Oceania: Live In NYC' audio/video live album Smashing Pumpkins will release September 3.
Available in DVD, Blu-Ray and CD formats, 'Oceania: Live In NYC' documents a December 2012 show the band played at the Barclays Center, in Brooklyn. The 24-song set included all of Smashing Pumpkins' most recent album, 'Oceania,' and some classics, like 'Cherub Rock' and 'Tonight, Tonight.'
Here's a fan video showing the Pumpkins playing “Bullet With Butterfly Wings” at Barclays.
