The fans votes means more than just money to Felipe, it's validation for all his hard work.
Felipe Gustavo woke up this morning $25,000 richer than he was yesterday thanks to the fans who selected him as the winner of the Berrics Run & Gun contest.
Felipe's 60-second run was no joke as he beat out a select group of 14 skaters including the likes of Andrew Reynolds, Torey Pudwill, Shane O'Neill, and Manny Santiago just to name a few.
We caught up with Felipe at the Red Bull headquarters, here's what he had to say.
Now that you've had a day to think about it how are you going to spend the $25,000?
I can't believe I won the money, I've never held that much in my hand before. I'll help my family out with the cash. Also with Christmas coming maybe I'll get my mom, my dad and my girlfriend a good gift.
What was the first thing you thought when you saw Eric Koston at your door?
I was super shocked. I had no idea what was going down. Koston showed up, and I was like what are you doing here? It was so random. They gave me the little box, I opened it and inside was the cash and a GoPro.
It was a big surprise, they fully got me.
What is it like to hold that much money in your hand?
Crazy having all that in cash, it's unbelievable. My first thought was about bringing the money to Brazil because it's worth double there, so I felt like I won $50,000. I was stoked on everything, it was a good day.
After looking at the other clips you were up against what did you think your chances were of winning?
Shane O'Neill was the first and most impressive. I thought damn it's going to be pretty hard to beat. Torey Pudwill's and Manny Santiago's were really good too. Right off the bat, I didn't think I was going to win, but it's voting, so you never know.
Whose clip were you scared of?
Shane's, Torrey, and Manny's. They took it really serious and you could tell, so I tried as hard as I can. There was 14 other skaters apart of the contest, so I tried really hard.
How much time did you have to decide your run?
You're given 24 hours to film a 60 second run. It's up to you on what you wan't to do. I skated for about an hour lining up what I wanted to do with my filmed and my Plan B manager.
I skated for about three hours till I finally landed my flu run, then I did it again to try new tricks.
Where does this contest win rank?
It's pretty important to me, for people to recognize how hard I work. That's something I really appreciate, all the people that voted for me, it's crazy that I have fans. The money helps, but the fact that people like my skateboarding is cool.
If you can say something to the fans, what would it be?
I appreciate the love you have for me…Thanks to all the fans that voted. Thank you to my family, they helped me out big time with voting. I'm pretty stoked about it.
