Photography is the most accessible and intelligible language of snowboarding, understood not only by those who ride but also those who don’t, but should. It’s not only a catalyst for progression but also a record of how snowboarding has progressed: It can teach and inspire, as well as set benchmarks to which one can aspire, both in photography and riding.

Each week Danny Burrows asks a pro photographer to choose a shot from their archives and divulge its worth of a thousand words.

The subject of this week’s Photo of the Week is the rider, producer and director of KBR productions, Petrus Koskinen and was shot by fellow Jyväskylä local Niki Rutanen.

“I've been riding in the same resort as Petrus and Toni (Kerkelä) since I started snowboarding” recalls Niki, but it wasn’t until 2008 that he began shooting snowboarding with their film crew, KBR.

If you don’t already know KBR they are a grass roots filming posse from Jyväskylä, Finland, that was created in 2004 by then groms Petrus Koskinen and Toni Kerkelä.

The outfit’s initial intention was not to make movies for public consumption but like so many crew to record the riding antics of them and their friends. Their first season of filming done, they realized they had enough bangers to put together a full movie and have continued to do so with unceasing zest in ever greater degrees of success since.

They are representative of a generation of handy shred kids who armed with affordable cameras, ubiquitous edit programs and the free distribution network that is the internet have given the big players in the industry of snowboard movies a run for their money. They may not have the budget for helis or open-ended AK missions but their jibbery is perhaps more representative of what is going down in streets and parks the snowboard world over. Somehow what the likes of KBR deliver is a truer reflection of the snowboard scene; it’s accessible, and still has that DIY punk element to it.

This year’s movie Golden Years, according to Petrus, is going to be their best movie yet. The call sheet includes Teo Konttinen and Jani Sorasalmi, Petrus, Toni Kerkelä, Antti Jussila, Sakari Lähdesmäki, Janne Lipsanen, Sami Luhtanen, Niko Länsiö and Elias Veijola. The full movie will drop in September, so check it out at www.kbrprod.com and stay tuned with their antics on www.facebook.com/kbrproductions.

The booster in the shot was built in the resort of Pyhä: “The weather was sick when we were shooting this spot. It was all cloudy down, but when we came up, we were above the clouds” Niki recalled. “You don't see that kind of weather in Finland too often”.
