The countdown on our Top 20 Snowboarders continues, just missing out on a Top 5 spot is one of the sports biggest players: Torstein Horgmo.
Torstein Horgmo is one of the most technical Snowboarders in the World and is constantly progressing the sport to previously unforeseen levels. He can not only dominate contests but also star in ender parts in some of the biggest movies. Torstein's ability sees him attack street rails, kickers and backcountry often with tricks that have never before been witnessed.
Horgmo’s first competition results came way back in 2004 where the then 16 year old had an impressive season which saw him win the Burton European Open Junior jam, quickly followed by a win at the Air & Style Rookie Challenge in 2005. The same season he won the 5star O’Neill Freestyle in Avoriaz, which lead to a personal invite from Terje Haakonsen for the Artic Challenge in which Torstein walked away in 6th place. Not a bad season from the young Norwegian.
Since then Torstein’s results list is extensive, with multiple wins in the biggest contests including 1st in the 09 Winter dew Tour Slopestyle and again in 2010 and 11, 1st in the 2011 X games Big Air, 1st at the 2013 X Games Big Air in Aspen and this year 1st at the Burton European Open Big Air. You get the point, Torstein is not messing around when he straps in at a contest. Just check out his career highlights at the bottom.
When Torstein isn’t competing he is filming ridiculously good parts in the biggest videos. His first notable part was in long-term sponsor DC’s Mountain lab 1.5 and since then he has appeared in multiple videos including Standard Movies “The Storming” in which Horgmo threw down the first ever Triple Cork caught on film.
Whatever video Torstein appears in, it’s almost a given that it will either be the opening part or the ender. This season Torstein upped the Ante by releasing his own full-length movie entitled “Horgasm A Love Story” which has been described by some as having the best Snowboarding of any other movie period. If Torstein has a section out, it creates a huge buzz and will be shared on pretty much every Snowboarders Social media page.
Whilst Torstein is without doubt an amazing Snowboarder, it’s not just a natural ability that gets him results. His work ethic is unmatched and he will literally try a trick over and over all day until he gets it to 100% perfection. It is this almost robotic precision that drives him to be the best that he can be.
Horgmo has achieved so much it’s hard to say what he will do next. Already one of the sports highest earners, he could walk away and not have to work again but with his drive it’s clear that isn’t an option for Torstein. An Olympic Gold medal could be achievable next year in Sochi in either Slopestyle or Big Air and he will keep putting out the most progressive video parts for years to come. He now has his own brand Awsm, which he started with long time friend Andreas Wigg, so maybe Torstein will eventually concentrate on the business side. Whatever Torstein decides to do, it will without question yet again set the standard for others to follow.
