Early season at resorts can be tricky if you don’t know where to find the best snow or the best plate of nachos after a day on the mountain. Which is why we recruited help from five ski-town locals from Utah to Colorado to California.
Next up, is Aspen Snowmass, Colorado.
Aspen Mountain and Snowmass is open for daily operations. When the season rolls, you can’t go wrong with either Snowmass or Aspen Mountain. But for Aspen native Mike Britt, an Aspen Mountain ski patroller for the last four years, he likes to keep it local and stay in town at Aspen Mountain. This is his perfect day.
First move: Walk or take the free bus to Aspen Mountain. Or bike. “I just got a fat tired snow bike, so I’m going to try and ride to the hill,” Britt says.
Breakfast: “I wait until I’m on the hill and then it’s breakfast at Bonnie’s,” Britt says. “Usually two eggs over easy on top of an oatmeal pancake with a side of bacon covered in maple syrup.”
Meet friends here: Britt doesn’t like waiting around, but if he did, the Silver Queen Gondola would be a good spot to meet friends.
First runs: Start on 1A in the morning, then move over to FIS lift and the Dumps. Then hit the Big 3: Walshes, Hyrups and Kristi.

Lunch: Order up at Big Wrap, located in town. “I like the To Thai For wrap or on Thursdays they have the Pilgrim, which is basically Thanksgiving dinner in a wrap,” Britt says.
Afternoon runs: Find stashes of fresh snow in the trees off Bell Mountain or make the traverse out to Jackpot.
Après: Cheers to a good day with beers at the Red Onion.
