In the pantheon of snow-sports movies, "The Art of Flight" ranks right up at the top. An amazing journey documenting Travis Rice’s bid to board the furthest flung reaches of the globe, the film took two years and about $2 million to complete, no small potatoes in the world of documentaries. It features some of the world's best boarders, including John Jackson, Jake Blauvelt and Nicolas Muller.
Now, with "The Art of Flight: The Series,"Red Bull TV takes you on a journey within the journey via an in-depth examination of the making of the original film, presented in seven episodes.
What you'll definitely see are some of the wildest snowboarding moments ever captured on film. But there are plenty of fascinating factoids about the project that aren't readily apparent. Like that 2,683 hours of footage was shot over 19 months using 10 different types of cameras. Or that $3,000 was spent on alcohol and $6,592 on guns and ammo for wiling away the stormy downtime in the Alaskan backcountry. Or how about those 65 cases it took to transport gear down to Santiago, Chile, for the South American portion of the shoot? And don't forget the 376 sandwiches prepared and inhaled during filming in Aspen.
So while you kick back and watch Rice and company do their dazzling thing, know that more than a few lenses were destroyed and countless tunas on rye were sacrificed during the making of this film. Check outthetrailerbelowtoseeforyourself:
