Emirates Team New Zealand's campaign to wrest the America's Cup from the grasp of Oracle Team USA got off to a strong start on Saturday, as the Kiwis secured a 2-0 lead at the end of the first day's racing.

The spectators who flocked to San Francisco Bay to watch the two crews were rewarded with a day of close racing, a couple of lead changes and a bit more drama than they expected as, even before the race started, Oracle's Joey Newton slid off the AC72.

In both races, Emirates Team New Zealand were faster across the start line than their American rivals, ultimately leading to victories of 36 and 52 seconds in races 1 and 2 respectively, with average wind speeds of 16 knots.

Despite the difference in the teams' boat designs, the racing was close on day one. Victory will go to the crew that's first to get to nine points. That's nine race wins for the Kiwis and 11 (due to a penalty) for the Americans.

What will happen in races 3 and 4? Watch day two LIVE on from 10.15pm CEST on Sunday, September 8.
