Barra Da Tijuca backed off today, but was still funpark-esque, which led to contest organisers running the first day of heats for the Colgate Plax Rio Pro. It was a massive day, with four rounds being completed and the quarterfinalsts being decided. And of those quarterfinalists, two of the day's standouts: Carissa Moore and Sally Fitzgibbons.
“It feels good to move onto Quarterfinals,” said Carissa afterwards. “With a beachbreak situation it can be tricky and random so it’s a relief to skip that Round four.”
Riss was also asked about closing the gap on the world title race: “I’m not thinking about the world title when I’m in the water, but I’ve definitely thought about it and I’m excited to be in the race,” she said. “My whole family is behind me, but I’ve got a long road ahead of me and still have a lot of work to do.”
In round one, Sally posted two strong waves to take down Sage Erickson and Paige Hareb. She then refocused, to beat Paige again in round four and scoop a spot in the quarters. When competition resumes, Sally will face Lakey Peterson in the first heat.
