If you had 30 seconds with the Cape Town big man, what answers would you seek? How 'bout the basics…
On influence: (Californians) Justin Mattison and Joe Crimo. I'd watch those guys all day. Joe was doing Shrink Wraps when people weren't even thinking of stuff like that. It looked like he was dancing on water and that appealed to me.
On frequency: Eight to 10 times.
On length of session: An hour-and-a-half.
On waves per session: At my home spot it's super consistent and it’s a wedge so you catch a lot of waves. In an hour of surfing, you can catch 50 to 70 waves.
Longest ever session: Seven hours when I was 11 years old at New Pier, Durban. After the fifth hour I remember sitting and talking for the next couple of hours. I wanted to surf through the low-tide and into the high tide.
Nickname: Man Bear Pig. It happened 'cause when I got hungry I went, "Screw this, I'm fricken hungry!" And everyone, went, "Jordy! Hungry! Like a caveman!"
On board punching: I used to punch boards but I grew out of it. I hurt my knuckle and then I started punching the grip because it didn’t hurt as much. And then I stopped.
