Today at Lowers, Mr Andino closed down the day's proceedings with the day's highest combined total.
Just as Adriano finished yesterday's last heat with the highest combined total of the, Kolohe Andino today finished the day's last heat with the day's highest combined total. Flexing local knowledge and pulling speed out of flat sections, Kolohe hammered through turns way too powerful for the small conditions and showed Matt Wilkinson the door.
But, let's backtrack a little. Today's biggest shock came in the form of John John Florence's dispatch from the Hurley Pro at the hands of Alejo Muniz. Interestingly, Alejo didn't know who he'd be competing against when he woke up, and put on John's film, Done, to get excited. Imagine his surprise when he got to the beach and saw the draw, and even more so when he beat his day's inspiration.
Also getting it done today was Sebastian 'Sea Bass' Zietz, who took an elimination round win over Raoni Monteiro. “I was super bummed in Tahiti and I didn’t really trust my instincts,” said Sea Bass afterwards. “I’m going back to the old school and trusting my instincts. I’m hoping to get a result here and I love Trestles. It’s been a big part of my career. It’d be great to get a Quarters or Semis and I’ve got a good small wave board.”
Freddy Patacchia was another winner, proving that even in small waves, he can come up with the goods over the trickery of the new school – even when it's Miguel Pupo. “Conditions are small and I went in to the heat thinking I was going to go left,” said Freddy. “I saw Seabass and Jeremy get scores on rights and I knew Miggy was going to go out there and punt on the lefts and thought I had to look different. I kept an eye out for the rights and got a couple. My boards have been feeling good under my feet and I know when I get a right I can put it up in to the lip and throw a nice fin. Ever since Bali, my backhand has been my go-to.”
In the second last heat of the day, Bede Durbidge scraped past Damo Hobgood by 0.37 points. When competition resumes tomorrow morning, Jordy Smith is up in the day's first heat against Brett Simpson. Don't miss a second.
