The Rip Curl Pro is currently lighting it up, so let us zoom in on the set-up itself for a moment.
Oh, welcome to the site of the Rip Curl Pro, the second important pillar of the European leg (right behind France), and a guaranteed barrel fest: Supertubos, Peniche, Portugal.
This is a class A-grade beachbreak setup, and therefore needs to be pampered by conditions the same way that most beachbreaks do: Carefully. A west swell is dead-on, so a little kink in it never hurts since it's a sand-bottom and needs some assistance. Depending on the day you might find rights or lefts (or both if you're v lucky). Depending on the tide, you might be dealing with backwash, though between mid and high tide is the best time to paddle out. Supertubos certainly ain't an ideal summer surfing spot but there's always something. If you really wanna maximise your session quality, make it in winter, and make it mid-week. Just be wary – Supertubos will slap you down and eat your board for breakfast quicker than the sardine swims. Oh, and while we're mentioning boards... make it something fast and tight that'll knife a barrel real nice.
