Mick stays hot and defeats a wildcard; Julian Wilson stomps a perfect 10 alley oop.
Are you sweating yet? A burly swell made the third day of competition rather interesting on the third day at the Rip Curl Pro. Overhead, thumping barrels stormed the beach at Peniche and the competitors gave it hell. Mick stayed on his game to defeat wildcard Jacob Wilcox in a dazzling battle. Jordy beat the Slater-slaying Frederico Morais to hold onto his slim world title hopes. And did you see that air Julian Wilson did? Oh boy.
Standout of the day: Sorry Mick, but today the nod just has to go to Julian. That alley oop would have been a mind-blowing clip in any web edit. To do it in a heat is an absolute farce. We applaud.
Honorable mention: OK, we’ll give Mick the HM. When you’ve got a world title riding on the line, it’s easy to crack under pressure and do something stupid like lose to a wildcard (just ask Kelly). However, Mick stayed focused and won his clash with Jacob Wilcox and that’s worth pointing out. Jordy also dazzled. And Bede Durbridge got on a real heater to defeat Kolohe in Round 2.
What to watch for: If we’re really lucky we’ll see another air like Julian’s, but that’s unlikely. One heat worth noting is the clash between Mick Fanning, John John Florence and Matt Wilkinson in Round 4. That one will surely not disappoint.
