The specialty heat at the Haleiwa Prime just got a lil more special.
The brands running the comps these days are kinda on to something: Choice. Guys like Hurley let us choose a wildcard for the Lowers ‘CT and O'Neill let us vote for four slots in the Coldwater Classic, and now? Reef lets us vote for a few giants at the specialty heat at the Triple Crown Haleiwa Prime. Thank you, kind sirs.
But here’s why this is especially rad:
All the guys you can vote for online to be in the four-man final (next to last year’s seeded champ Sunny Garcia) flat out rip. Even if they’re a decade or two older than guys on tour like Kolohe and Gabby.
You’ve got until October 28th to cast your ballots, so click a couple buttons and you’ll have executed your democratic privilege like the upright citizen you are. But whose left to vote for and why will they put on a show next to Sunny in, probably, 6-8ft (Hawaiian style) punchy, reef rights?
Brad Gerlach: Kind of the Dane Reynolds of the late 80s and early 90s, Brad always carried that bizzarely magnetic power and flow. His approach at Haleiwa this year will be nothing short of unpredictable seeing as most have not seen him in vids for sometime now.
Kaipo Jaquias: Longtime Hawaiian WCT warrior, Kaipo has always made Haleiwa his bitch. Something about his connection to this wave from decades of Triple Crowns is extraordinary and expect him to place 2nd at worst.
Mark Occhilupo: Past World Champion and one of the most ferocious goofyfooters the world has ever known, it’s no wonder Occy’s in the runnings. Next to all these regular footers, it’d be refreshing to see a guy with his powerful right-foot-forward.
Matt Archbold: Aerial innovator, next to the likes of Christian Fletcher in the ‘80s, and Off the Wall closeout-packer, Matt ‘s approach to Hawaiian surf has always been exciting. Expect nothing less at Haleiwa.
Michael Ho: Hawaiian royalty and father of present day professionals Mason and Coco Ho, Michael was a leader of the radical Hawaiian surfing movement in the 70’s. Still out there charging from Backdoor to Waimea, Haleiwa is still practically his homebreak.
Tom Curren: 3X World Champion and basically the guy everyone from Kelly Slater to Dane Reynolds has modeled their style from, Tom is as smooth as silk in big Hawaiian rights. Guy’s still got an inimitable frontside carve, and bottom line: Guy’s still got it.
